PARK AND READ
A pioneering partnership between Stagecoach Cambridge and the Cambridgeshire County Council’s Library Service – Park and Read – is about to be launched. The initiative is funded by Arts and Business New Partners investment, as part of the Books and Business programme which is designed to develop and encourage mutually beneficial partnerships between business and public libraries. Park and Ride buses will have a pouch with the “Quick Reads” books inside for passengers to read on their way to town. These are 12 specially written books launched as a series written by such famous authors as Maeve Binchy, Joanna Trollope, and Ruth Rendell. The books on each bus will be changed at intervals in the hope that people will get a chance to read them all. Park and Ride services operate from five sites around Cambridge and carry more than 1.6 million passengers a year.Lynda Martin, Partnership Manager, Cambridgeshire County Council Library Service, said: “Quick Reads” collection of books will be the perfect length to dip into during a bus journey. We hope this wonderful new idea will inspire people to discover the joy of reading for pleasure, and to join their local library where an amazing selection of books can be borrowed!Philip Norwell, Commercial Director Stagecoach Cambridgeshire, added: Stagecoach is delighted to be involved with another new initiative namely Park and Read especially as it involves working for the first time with the local library services in order to encourage people to read more. Stagecoach is committed to supporting the local community.”To promote the scheme, there will also be a Park and Ride bus in the centre of town, outside Boots, Sidney Street, on Saturday, February 25, with family story times and creative activities on board. Passers-by will also be able to access information about the library services and have the chance to join up as members.Park and Read will be launched on Thursday, March 2, 2006, to coincide with World Book Day, at the Trumpington Park and Ride site.Peter Tullin, Director Arts and Business East, commented: “In today’s busy world it can be difficult for people to find the time to get to the library. Park and Read is a powerful project that connects commuters with the benefits of reading by bringing the library direct to them; at the same time making their daily journey into work more interesting. This project therefore benefits everyone: the library service, Stagecoach, and most importantly, the commuters themselves.”
